Do You Follow the Six-Month Rule?

By Lisa DiTullio

Spring is the perfect time to put things in order. Organizational experts suggest we follow the 6-month rule to determine what we should keep and what we should relinquish. If you haven't used it (or worn it) in the past six months, it is highly likely you no longer need it-time to let it go.

When was the last time you assessed your project management toolbox? This is a terrific time to evaluate what you have, define what you need, and surrender what you no longer use (or what no longer offers value to your project).

I love vanilla and the number four; it's all about keeping things simple and memorable. So, in the spirit of both, I offer you the following advice:

Maintain a toolbox of 4 primary tools to manage your projects:

  • Business Case/Project Scope: Justifies why the project is needed and what the project will do or deliver
  • Project Plan: Says what needs to be done by when and by whom
  • Project Status Report: Tells how the project is progressing and what is needed to be successful
  • RAID: An easy way to manage and track risks, assumptions, issues and decisions

Clean out. De-clutter. Free yourself of burdensome, time-consuming tools.

Whether it's done in a mission statement, a vision, a charter, or all three, documenting your project scope is a step you can't afford to skip. Our Generic Project Plan can help you fold everything together into a usable document. View your regular project status reports as a risk management tool.
